about

"The songs on this mix tape come from my personal collection of gospel faith records that I have acquired over the years. I’ve always wanted to have my own late night radio station where I can talk about and play these albums but have never been given the opportunity. I know I could do a podcast or internet radio show but, I also know I’m never going to actually do that. The songs range from late 1950’s-early 1980s and country to electronic while the artists on this album range from DIY artists selling records in stenciled paper sleeves out of their trunks to soulless major label groups trying to cash in on the gospel craze of the late 60s-early 70s. The Christian faiths these artists represent a large variety too, everything from catholic to LDS to hippy cult but my favorite stuff is the evangelical stuff. In 2009 I did a performance art tour with my friend JRC under the Hi My Name Is Ryan moniker where I held services in DIY clubs and anarchist collectives all over the states of Utah and Arizona. I handed out little hymnals with my favorite gospel songs, read about the beattitudes and all as a high energy, sad traveling preacher type of performance art charcter. It is the only time I have ever tried to share this side of me before and people were either really upset and offended (triggering negative past experiences with Christianity) or made a joke out of it. The later of the two was really upsetting but the first of the two is understandable. It’s hard to share something like this without it coming across as goofy or like a sales pitch. I don’t want this to be either of those things; just an interesting document of some of my favorite tracks from this often over looked genre and period of time"-Ryan
