about

Something that has always bugged me about the ska music scene/community is that when people talk about it, it makes it seem so small. With a focus on just a few bands that “made it” every decade. When there has always been a fun/wild underground scene. Some of these bands actually did hit it big, but they are ignored and often forgotten when talking about ska music and that’s why they are included. For those of you more familiar with these bands, you will notice that almost half of them are from the 70s-80s and there is a reason for that… something, that I think a lot of people don’t realize or forget to mention when talking about ska music (especially when referring to them as bullshit “waves”) is that in the 70s-80s (and even into the early 90s) ska music was considered a really cool/respectable style of music to play. And you can see it/hear it in the music too. Lastly, I wanted to point out that, I tried to focus on bands that were predominately black and/or femme for this comp, these two groups have been erased from most music history, but it feels particularly hurtful/gross in ska music because the focus for the past 20-30 years has been white guys that like to party. And that shit is fucking tired and boring.
